Texas Style Chili

Sure to warm you all over, the Chili con carne (aka “chili”) is a highly spiced stew made with meat and chili peppers, and the classic Texas Style Chili is an all-time favorite among the foodies. A cowboy meal from San Antonio and invented by the Texas natives, the chili con carne is the national dish of Texas. The regular Texas Style Chili simply contains peppers, garlic, onions and cumin, which are simmered with chopped or ground beef. People also use different types of meat and other ingredients, mostly beans and tomatoes, to create wide variations of the Texas-style chili con carne. While the recipes might differ a bit from person to person, Texans just love their chili con carne.

Ingredients:
If you ask a chef, he will tell you that the basic ingredients of chili do not contain beans or any other vegetables. In fact, the basic ingredients of traditional chili con carne consist of scrapped beef stewed with peppers and water. These are cooked until a thick soup is formed. But, the Americans have often played around with this simple recipe and created delicious cuisines to satisfy their taste buds. You can also add, tomatoes, peanut butter, tomatillos, saffron, sweet corn, cocoa, chocolate, bourbon, coffee, pineapples, bananas, oranges, tequila, cola, honey, cinnamon, allspice, chorizo, pasta, molasses, vinegar, beer, whiskey, and red wine to give a different taste to the traditionally cooked recipe.

Types:
  • Vegetarian chili: For vegetarians, the Texas style vegetarian chili has become a popular dish. The vegetarian chili is famous as ‘chili sin carne’ or ‘chili sans carne’ or chili without meat. The recipe of this type of chili is same except the beef and other meat is replaced with tofu or potatoes. Beans are one of the main ingredients in vegetarian chili and the other ingredients may also include mushrooms, beets and corn.
  • Chili verde: Also called green chili, Chili verde is a Mexican-American sauce that can be moderately to extremely spicy. It is made by slowly cooking pork chunks in a mixture that contains chicken broth, garlic and roasted green chilies. Poblano, jalapeño, Serrano are used to adjust the spiciness of this stew. It is usually eaten as a filling in San Francisco burrito.
Nowadays, frozen chili has become quite popular with the consumers, as its one-pot wonder and saves you on the cooking time. Moreover, the frozen chili con carne keeps intact the natural flavor and nutrients.

Say Bye To Trans-Fat With Frozen Foods

When it comes to fat, trans-fat is considered to be the worst of all types. Tans-fat, also known as unsaturated fat or fatty acids is responsible for raising the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL) and lowering the ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL) in your body. A high amount of LDL and low HDL cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease in both men and women. Despite its harmful effects, trans-fats are still used by various food manufacturing companies, particularly, of fried foods, such as doughnuts and French fries. The main reason behind this is that trans-fats keep the food items fresh for a longer time and gives it a longer shelf life. Besides, fried food, commercial baked food such as cookies, cakes, pastries and crackers may also contain a heavy amount of trans-fat.

However, if you want to stay away from trans-fat, opting for frozen food items is a great alternative. As the micro-organisms do not grow below -9.5°C, there is no requirement to add any kind of preservatives or fatty acids in the food item. The freezing itself is sufficient in preventing food decay. For long term preservation, a tasteless and odorless stabilizer named Carboxymethyl cellulose is added to the frozen food, which neither has any effect on the quality or taste of the food. It also doesn’t adulterate it.

Another option is to shift on to kettle cooked food items. Unlike the deep frying method, the kettle cooking adopts the method of slow cooking at a low temperature. The food items that require frying such as chips, tacos and tortillas are first fried at low temperature and later cooled down. This is basically done to break down the starch content. Then the extra oil is removed from them prior to the second frying at higher temperature.

Classic Foods is one of the famous producers of kettle chips and food products in the state. They use a range of steam jacketed and injected kettle cookers to make a number of kettle cooked food products. The kettles include vertical, steam jacketed kettles, MTC steam injected kettle and horizontal, steam jacketed kettles.

To name a few, kettle cooked food items offered by them are chili, Soups, Sauces, Queso, Gravies, Taco Fillings, Beans, Fajitas, Jalapenos, Hot dogs, Chips, Barbecue products are cooked.  For more information about the products and services offered by Classic Foods, feel free to visit them at 629 Mony, Ft. Worth, Texas 76102. You can also call them at 817.332.1071.

  • Retention of nutrients: Nutrients gets locked in the freezing process, hence they stay intact within the food items thereby making it good for health.
  • Freshness and quality: Frozen food retains its freshness and is safe to be consumed. Most of the frozen packaging mention the “best before” date before which they should be consumed.
  • No preservative needed: Since freezing itself reduces the bacterial growth there is no or minimal need to add preservatives to food products.

Not only for the non vegetarians, there are also many chili recipes for the vegetarians. The ingredients of all chili recipes are almost same i.e. onions, tomatoes, beef and chili seasoning.

You can make a chili dog by adding a topping of hot chili over your hot dog. Chili hot dogs are very easy to make and can be prepared in just around 20 minutes. Also, they are brawny enough to be served as a tempting meal. Here are some instructions to make the best chili hot dogs.

Preheat the oven to 350° F. in case you haven’t melt the hot dogs, you can do this while heating the oven. To melt the hot dogs, submerge them in lukewarm water till they get softened. They should be completely defrosted before baking.

Spread out a baking sheet and lace the hot dogs on it. Remember that you should leave at least a space of 1 inch between each hot dog. In case you do not have a baking sheet, place the hot dogs diagonally on the grill rack of the oven. Let them cook for about ten minutes. When the hot dogs start to swell, they indicate that they are done. If they are on the grill rack, you will see marks of the grill rack on the hot dogs.

Take the hot dogs out of the oven. Put each of them in the hot dog buns. Now, place the hot dogs on the serving plate.

Pour the Sheriff Blaylock’s hot dog chili in a pot and warm it on low flame.

In a mixing bowl, add cheese, mustard and onions and stir it while cooking the chili.

Add this mixture to the chili and stir well. Remove the chili from heat.
